NEW ORLEANS - Coming off a tough defeat to Rice yesterday, the Tulane men's tennis team rebounded well in a come-from-behind 5-2 victory over Florida A&M on Saturday afternoon in a dual match at the Goldring Tennis Center.
"This was one of those great college matches," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "It didn't start in our favor, but we finished strong. Florida A&M came out really hungry and brought it to us and we almost got the doubles points, but had to start off down one."
FAMU (1-3) took the doubles point with wins over Tulane (4-1) on courts two and three. Maurice Wamokowa and Temuera Asafu-Adjaye defeated Shaye Wali and Taskuma Ohashi, 9-8 (7-5), on court two and Levan Clark and Michael Moore edged Rodrigo Rappaccoili amd Adam Bernstein, 9-8 (8-6), on court three.
"The guys then came out and got the job done in singles," Booras added. "This match was a real character builder for us because we knew Florida A&M was going to be a team about the same level as us. To come back and rebound like we did after last night's tough match makes me really proud of the guys and shows maturity."
Ian Mark tied the overall match with a quick, 6-0, 6-1, win over Happy on court one and the Green Wave got the second point after Rappaccoili got past Moore, 6-3, 7-5, on court five. Joe Young then broke a 2-2 tie with a 6-3, 6-3, win over Wamokowa on court three.
Bernstein secured the victory and Tulane's fourth point with a 6-7, 6-1, 6-2, victory over Asafu-Adjaye on court six.
Ionescu gave the Green Wave the fifth point with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, win over Clark on court two.
The win for Tulane surpassed the program's total win total from a season ago when the Green Wave posted a 3-18 dual mark in the first year since having to disband after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Tulane has a week off before traveling to Starkville, Miss., to take on Mississippi State next Saturday at 1 p.m. CST.
