HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Tulane's men's tennis team played their way to a 7-0 sweep over host Southern Miss in the final day of the 2011 Conference USA Shootout on Sunday to post a 2-1 record over the three day event held at the USM Tennis Courts.
The Green Wave (9-10, 2-6 C-USA) won the doubles point with a pair of 8-0 wins and failed to drop a set on the five singles courts to complete the sweep. USM (3-17, 0-4 C-USA) played only five players so results were not recorded on court three in doubles and court six in singles.
"Today was a big challenge for us having to rebound after a tough loss yesterday, but our guys stepped up to the challenge in a big way," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "We got the good start in doubles that we have been looking for and were able to carry that into singles. We got a good jump on Southern Miss and were able to control the match by playing our style of play. We talked about playing our game the whole weekend and playing a complete match. We were able to produce that today."
The duo of Idan Mark and Joe Young defeated USM's Jan Burmeister and Julien Roussel, 8-0, on court one, while Rodrigo Rappaccioli and Shaye Wali took care of Paulo Alvarado and Jovan Zeljkovic, 8-0, on court two to earn the doubles point and get the match started off well for Tulane.
Wali's 6-2, 6-2, victory over Alvarado on court three clinched the victory for the Green Wave with the fourth point of the afternoon. Etham Frenkel recorded the second point of the match with a 6-0, 6-0, win over Michael Sims on court five, while Young posted the third point with a 6-3, 6-4, win over Burmeister on court two.
"I'm really happy with the play of Etham Frenkel today," Booras added. "He got the call and came right in and took care of the mismatch and got the job done for us."
Mark and Rappaccioli also recorded straight set wins to complete the sweep for Tulane. Mark, ranked 105th in the nation, won, 6-4, 6-1, on court one, while Rappaccioli earned a 6-1, 7-5, victory over Zeljkovic on court four.
Tulane will complete the six-match road swing Saturday when they visit Louisiana-Lafayette before completing the regular season on April 13th with a home match against Xavier (NO).
