LAFAYETTE, La. - Having to face 85-plus temperatures and an experienced Louisiana-Lafayette team, the Tulane men's tennis team was able to come away with a 4-3 victory on Saturday afternoon in a dual match that lasted over four hours at the Cajuns Courts.
"I can't say enough about how proud of the guys I am," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. " Today was a huge win for the program. It put us at .500 and kept our momentum going into the final week of the regular season. The guys fought hard in very tough conditions against a very experienced ULL team. I'm looking forward on building on this win."
Tulane (10-10) took the doubles point with a sweep to open the match and Adam Bernstein and Shaye Wali earned two quick wins in singles to put the Green Wave up, 3-0, in the match.
ULL (6-11) was not going to bow out quietly and won the next three singles matches before Tulane's Radu Ionescu, back in his first match since his injury, defeated ULL's Robert Voss, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, on court three to secure the victory.
"Hats off to Radu who in his first match back was put under pressure with the match on the line and was able to come up with a huge win for us against a very gritty competitor who is having a good season," Booras added.
Wali took care of business on court four, winning 6-3, 6-3, over Ted Nilsson, while Bernstein handled Elliot Minvielle, 6-2, 6-2, on court six.
The duo of Idan Mark and Joe Young won 8-3 on court one in doubles, while Wali and Rodrigo Rappaccioli won, 8-7, on court two and Bernstein and Takuma Ohashi earned an 8-1 win on court three.
Tulane will complete the regular season Wednesday when they host Xavier (NO) at 3 p.m. CDT at the Goldring Tennis Center.
