HOUSTON - The first events of the 2011 Conference USA Track and Field Championships wrapped up on Friday evening at Holloway Field/Ley Track on the Rice University campus and Garrett Myer posted an eighth place finish in the decathlon to secure the first point of the championships for the Tulane track and field program.
Myer competed in the Thursday portion of the event, running the 100 and 400-meter dash events, while competing in the long jump, high jump and shot put competitions. The junior set new personal bests in the high jump and shot put. After day one Myer sat in ninth place in the ten-man field with a total of 3,066 points.
The Ft. Worth, Texas native had his lowest finish in the shot put, finishing tenth, but set a new career-best with a toss of 9.90-meters. He cleared the high jump bar at 1.72-meters to grab eighth place in the event and set a new PR. He grabbed a seventh place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.50-seconds) and long jump (6.40m), while finishing ninth in the 400-meter dash.
The strong showing in the field events continued for Myer on day two, with the junior grabbing personal bests in the discus and the javelin competitions. Myer tossed the discus 32.78-meters to open his afternoon in the field and followed that with a 42.66-meter throw of the javelin in the final field event of the decathlon. He finished seventh in the discus and sixth in the javelin, while also placing sixth in the pole vault (3.00-meters).
Myer didn't have the showing he wanted in the 110-meter hurdles, placing ninth overall with a time of 20.70-seconds to open competition. In the final leg of the two-day event, Myer posted a time of 5:18.00 in the 1500-meter run to place seventh in the event and claim an eighth place overall finish in the decathlon. The eighth place showing posted the first points of the championship for the Olive and Blue, who will have a full slate of competitors when the bulk of the individual championships start on Saturday.
The rest of the team will begin competition on Saturday night, with the women's long jump opening up the main portion of the Conference USA Championships. You can follow all of the action at the C-USA Championship page by clicking here.
