NEW ORLEANS - This weekend in Bloomington, Ind., the Tulane track and field program will send three individuals and one relay to the NCAA East Regional Meet in hopes of grabbing trips to the national meet that will be held June 8-11 in Des Moines, Iowa. At the regional, 48 participants will take part in the prelims of each event, with the top 24 advancing to the finals and the top 12 from the finals earning a trip to the NCAA National Meet.
This weekend, the Olive and Blue will send freshman Tiffany George, junior Ana Ruzevic and senior Zandria Debowles to the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the Indiana University campus. George will compete in both the 100 and 200-meter dash, Ruzevic will look to make a return trip to the national meet in the javelin and DeBowles will look run and jump her way to a national meet bid in the 400-meter hurdles.
The third ranked javelin thrower in the region, Ruzevic enters the weekend looking for her second trip to the NCAA National meet. The junior set the school record with a toss of 51.37-meters in the first meet of the outdoor campaign and won the Conference USA crown last weekend. Her toss of 49.22-meters was good enough to win the C-USA title by over a meter. Last season, Ruzevic placed ninth overall at last season's NCAA National Meet, after entering the postseason ranked 23rd in the East region. She posted a fifth place showing at the regional and advanced to Eugene, Ore. to compete on the national stage.
One of just eight freshman to advance to the regional in the 100-meter dash, George will enter the event ranked 23rd with a qualifying time of 11.47 seconds. In her first season on campus, the Zachary, La. native has etched her name into the record books with the third fastest 100-meter sprint in school history when she posted the 11.47 at the LSU Alumni Gold meet on April 23. The rookie will also run the 200-meter dash and enters as the 44th overall seed with a time of 23.83. George ran her season-best time - the sixth fastest in school history - in the event at the Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine, Calif. on May 1.
In the 400-meter hurdles, DeBowles will look to improve upon her runner-up finish at the Conference USA championships, entering the weekend ranked 21st in the East. Her time of 58.82-seconds would put her into the finales, but the senior will need to have a good showing to cement her spot in the final 24 at weeks end. This season, the senior has posted five times under 60-seconds this season and ranks third on the career charts entering the weekend.
The 4x100-meter relay team will also compete, with the Green Wave entering the meet ranked 22nd overall out of 24 teams. The squad set their season best time of 45.18 at the Tulane Team Challenge to open the 2011 outdoor campaign.
