NEW ORLEANS - For the second time in his career, Tulane track and field student-athlete Mike Mainguy has earned Conference USA All-Academic Team honors for his work on the track and in the classroom. The junior competed in the 3000 and 5000-meter races for the Green Wave this season and earned his second straight nod to the team after carrying a 3.93 GPA in the classroom.
Mainguy earns his second All-Academic selection of the season, also earning the accolade during the Cross Country season, with a 3.93 GPA after six semesters in Tulane's neuroscience program. The junior was named the Tulane Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second straight season at the annual Tulane Green Wave Student-Athlete Awards Banquet. He has also earned Conference USA Commissioners Honor Roll and the C-USA Commissioners Medal during each of his years Uptown, while being a member Tulane's 3.0 Club twice.
The Brookline, Mass. native held some of the team top times in the 3000-meter and 5000-meter events this season. Mainguy paced the team in both events, running a career best time at both distances. He opened the season with a PR time of 9:24.54 in the 3000-meter and bested his 5000-meter career mark twice during the season. At the LSU Relays, Mainguy ran a 16:21.10 over 5000-meters and then improved that time again at the Conference USA Championships on May 15 with a 16:19.92 showing.
The neuroscience major adds the 2011 Track and Field All-Academic honor to his trophy case alongside the 2009-10 honor from last season. He is a two-time recipient of the Tulane Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and has earned Academic All-Conference USA in cross country in each of the last two seasons.
