NEW ORLEANS - Rebecca Coady capped her career with a pair of accolades from the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, while two other individuals and a relay squad were also honored as All-State performers by the state's sports writers. Ana Ruzevic was honored with First Team honors by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association after earning First Team All-American accolades in the javelin this season.
Ruzevic earned her second straight nod to the All-Louisiana First Team by virtue of her school record toss of 51.37-meters in 2011. The junior started her outdoor campaign with the record setting and career-best throw at the season opening Tulane Team Challenge. Then, after missing nearly two months due to an injury, Ruzevic claimed the Conference USA javelin championship (49.22m) and entered postseason ranked third in the East Region.
The Split, Croatia native placed third overall at the NCAA East Regional with a toss of 48.62-meters and earned her second straight trip to the NCAA National Meet in Des Moines, Iowa. After narrowly missing All-American honors in 2010, Ruzevic left no doubt on her standing among the nation's best javelin competitors, finishing fourth overall at the 2011 NCAA Championships. In her second throw at the national meet, Ruzevic uncorked a 50.40-meter toss - her second best of the year - and earned the Green Wave's first All-American honors in a field event during the outdoor season.
Coady had a senior season to remember and capped her career by earning All-State honors in two events, pushing her career total to six All-LSWA honors in track. This season, she set personal best marks in three events and grabbed All-Louisiana honors in the 800 and 1,500-meter events. A native of Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Coady grabbed second team honors in the 1,500 and was a third team honoree in the 800-meter.
In her final season in the Olive and Blue, Coady posted career-bests in 800, 1,500 and 3,000-meter events. She claimed her top mark in the 800-meter at the Conference USA Championships when she crossed the finish line in 2:11.29 and then on the final day of the C-USA Championships she ran 4:28.98 to break her PR for the second time in 2011. She ran the 3,000-meter just once and crossed the line in 10:22.23 to post the team's best time of the year.
In her career, she has earned All-Louisiana honors in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase three times, the 1,500-meter twice and was honored once in the 800-meter run. She also earned her second All-State accolades in Cross Country earlier this year, adding to the award she won as a rookie in 2007. She is the school record holder in the 3,000-meter Steeplechase event, running 10:49.45 at the C-USA Outdoor Meet in 2010 and ranks among the school's career leaders in all four events which she competed in during her career. Coady ranks fourth all-time in the 1,500, seventh in the 3,000 and ninth in the 800-meter event, as well.
In her most successful season to date, senior Zandria Debowles earned Second Team All-State laurels in the 400-meter Hurdles. She grabbed Second Team All-Conference USA after posting a runner-up finish in the event at the C-USA Championships and ran a season-best time of 58.82 in the race. She posted a new PR four times during the outdoor slate and posted sub-60 times on five different occasions. Her time of 58.82 this season ranks her third on the Tulane career charts in the 400-meter hurdles and she have an extra year of eligibility after missing the entire 2010 outdoor schedule due to injury.
This is the second time that DeBowles has earned All-State honors in the 400-meter hurdles. The Marietta, Ga. native was a First Team All-State award winner during her sophomore season in the same event.
The 4x100-meter Relay team grabbed the final All-Louisiana honor for the Green Wave, as the squad comprised of Kasey Rodgers, Jamie Riles, Hilary Woods, Tiffany George earned Third Team all-state accolades. The team was made up of a junior, a sophomore and two freshmen and ran their fastest time of the season at the Tulane Team Challenge. The quartet broke the tape in 45.18 on the Tad Gormley Stadium track to etch their names into fourth in the Tulane record books.
