NEW ORLEANS - Tulane track and field freshman Stefany Cruz made a splash on the national stage this summer when she competed at the Mateo Flores National Stadium on August 6, 2011 and came away with the national triple jump record in her home country of Guatemala.
Cruz competed this summer for the Association of Friends of Athletics, an amateur athletic squad, and has competed in six meets this summer. In her most recent competition at the "Saturday of Athletics" meet, the Guatemala City native tied and later broke the Guatemala national record in the triple jump to claim the individual championship at the event.
After qualifying for the finals, Cruz posted a 13.13-meter jump (43.07 feet) on her first attempt - fourth jump overall - which tied the national record set by Maria Jose Paiz in 2002. In her final jump of the competition, Cruz cleared 13.28-meters (43.56 feet) to break the national mark.
Cruz bested her previous personal record jump of 12.84-meters (42.1 feet) by almost a foot and a half and cleared the field by over five feet in the event. That personal best was set two years ago and Cruz surpassed that twice this summer.
Her busy offseason will continue this fall in Guadalajara, Mexico as she will compete in the 16th edition of the Pan-Am Games. Cruz qualified for her spot in the Pan-Am Games on July 15 when she posted a jump of 13.08-meters (42.91 feet) to place fourth overall at the Central American and Caribbean Track and Field Championships.
