Looking at the Green Wave
Tulane will be honoring one of the most consistent coaches in program history over the weekend when they host the Kathy Trosclair Memorial. Trosclair guided the Green Wave to a 174-90 overall record in seven seasons at the helm of the program, posting 20-plus wins in six of her seven seasons. She collected the schools only 30-plus win campaigns, doing so in in both 1986 and 1987, but Trosclair's life was cut short after she lost her battle with ovarian cancer shortly after the `87 season.
This year's edition of the Green Wave are 4-4 overall after splitting matches on each of their first three weekends. Last weekend TU posted a three set victory at FAU on Thursday (Sept. 8) before dropping a five-set match at FIU on Friday (Sept. 9). This weekend will be about finding the consistency that head coach Sinisa Momic has been talking about for the past three weeks.
Cori Martone has led the attack over the past two weeks and sits atop the attacks list for the Olive and Blue. The sophomore has 60 kills, ranking tenth in Conference USA with 3.16 kills per-set, and is pacing the squad with a .361 hitting percentage. A native of Baton Rouge, La., Martone also ranks among the C-USA leaders in service aces (5th), points (7th), hitting percentage (9th) and blocks (17th).
Mel Mandelbaum and Lilly Wolfe have both been utilized in the six-two system that the Green Wave are using this season and the duo have each collected double-doubles twice on the year. They have accomplished the feat in the same matches, doing so versus San Diego State and FIU. Mandelbaum posted 28 assists and ten digs versus San Diego State and grabbed 17 digs and 34 assists at FIU. Wolfe posted 13 digs during each of her double-doubles, adding 20 assists versus the Aztecs and adding 18 assists on the Panthers home floor.
The freshman class has also had an impact on the floor this season for the Olive and Blue, with Anna Wruck and Grace Weave both ranking among the C-USA leaders on the stat sheet. Weaver ranks 17th in C-USA with 0.25 service aces per set, or six service aces in 24 sets, with Wruck sitting among the most efficient attackers in the conference with a .280 clip - ranking 18th - and among the top blockers in the league with 1.00 block per set, or 28 blocks in as many sets.
Scouting the Belmont
Belmont enters as winners of four of their last five matches - with the only setback coming on Tuesday against Evansville - and are 6-6 overall on the season. Maggie Johnson paces the Bruins attack with 197 kills (4.58 kps) and is second on the team with 156 digs. Johnson has topped the 15-kill mark in each of her last four matches, including 20 versus both Evansville and UT-Martin. Alison McCoy (27 blocks) leads a trio of Belmont players with 20-plus blocks mark and setter Hannah Miranda has handed out 440 assists. Their defense is paced by libero Jamie Lundstrom with 210 digs, while three other players have topped the 100-dig plateau.
Scouting the Lamar
The Cardinals head to the Kathy Trosclair Memorial with a 1-11 mark, winning their only match of the season versus Texas Southern on the opening weekend. Since then, Lamar has dropped ten straight matches, winning just one of the 31 sets they have played since their lone victory. Sierra Whittaker (119 kills) and Megan McStravick (89 kills) lead the offense and setter Madi Martin controls that offense with 227 assists. The Cardinals are out performing their opponents in just one category, blocking, posting 77 stuffs to just 62 for their opponents this season.
Scouting the South Alabama
The Jaguars are the most experienced team in the field, boasting just three freshmen and having eight upperclassmen. They arrive on the Uptown campus with a 4-5 overall record, after posting a 2-1 record at the PRO MAG Colonel Classic last weekend in Thibodaux, La. South Alabama has a balanced attack, which is led by setter Katariina Kananen with 302 assists, as three players have logged eighty-plus kills. Samia Salomao leads the way with 89 kills and the duo of Olivia Mohler and Melissa Waelter each boast 85 kills. Salomao ranks second on the team with 93 digs, behind libero Jenna Hassell's 112, and Mohler paces the squad with 23 blocks in 2011.
