NEW ORLEANS - In a match that began on Monday afternoon and ended Tuesday morning due to weather, the 72nd-ranked Tulane men's tennis team extended its home winning streak to five straight with a 6-1 victory over visiting Illinois State at the Goldring Tennis Center.
The match got underway at 1 p.m. CT on Monday with the Green Wave (7-4, 2-0 C-USA) taking the doubles points over ISU (5-5) before a thunderstorm rolled through uptown New Orleans that forced the match to be suspended until Tuesday morning.
"Rain delays are always a tough situation even if we would have finished playing yesterday," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "There is always a different element and dynamic to the match when you come back."
Tulane took the doubles point with wins on court one and court three. The pair of Idan Mark and Joe Young upended Willi Peter and Muddappa Appanervand, 8-6, on court one to secure the point, while Adam Bernstein and Takuma Ohashi defeated Tuomas Manner and Skip Span, 8-3, on court three.
A few singles sets were played on Monday before the rains came, but Tulane was able to hang onto the momentum despite the delay and take five of the six singles wins on Tuesday.
"It was great to see the guys bounce back this morning at the same point and even a little better then when we finished yesterday," Booras added. "We had some guys step up and come back. Shaye (Wali) did a great job of coming back against a tough player and getting a really clutch win for us. We took care of business when we needed to and we played a complete match over these two days. That is always our goal no matter what team we play."
Young's, 6-2, 7-6, victory for Tulane on court three over Skip Span secured the fourth point of the match and a win for the Green Wave.
Rodrigo Rappaccioli got past Jusso Ojanen, 6-0, 7-6, on court four got the scoring started for Tulane in singles. The third point of the match was won by Bernstein on court five, 7-5, 6-0, over Appanervand.
Shaye Wali came from a set down to take a, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, victory on court two for Tulane's fifth point, while Mark won, 6-3, 7-5, on court one for the sixth and final point of the match.
The Green Wave hit the road for the next three matches and will face Iowa, #37 Memphis and #56 Rice in Houston next weekend. Tulane will open the weekend against Iowa at 9 a.m. on Friday.
