NEW ORLEANS - It will be the stiffest field that the Tulane track and field program will face thus far in 2012 and a handful of Green Wave student-athletes will make the trek to Gainesville, Fla. for the two-day competition. The men's and women's squads will each compete in three relay events, while five women's participants will take to the oval.
All of the individual events will be contested on Friday (April 6) and senior Kasey Rodgers will kick off the festivities for the Olive and Blue in the 100 meter. Last weekend, Rodgers won the event at the Jaguar Invitational in 11.86, but will look to continue her improvement on the lanes and challenge her career-best time of 11.49 that she set last season at LSU.
Fellow senior Zandria Debowles will take part in the 400-meter hurdles for the third time in 2012. The Marietta, Ga. native posted her best time of the year in her last race in the event when she cleared all of the hurdles and broke the tape in 60.77. Her career-best mark came last season at the Conference USA Championships when she clocked a 58.82 showing to earn Second Team All-Conference USA.
Ana Ruzevic will look to capture her third individual title of the 2012 season when she joins the field in the javelin. The senior won the crown at the LSU Relays earlier this season and was just feet from breaking her own school record in the event. Last weekend, Ruzevic won the event at the Jaguar Invitational with a toss of 48.91-meters.
The distance crew will send a pair of participants to the oval, as Johanna Gretschel and Katherine Crabtree will participate in the 1,500 and 5,000-meter races, respectively. Gretschel's 1,500-meter race will be the third of the season for the senior, who owns a season and personal-best time of 4:40.31 from the LSU Relays on March 23. Crabtree posted her personal best time of 18:13.75 in the 5,000-meter at the LSU Relays last month.
The relay portion of the meet will hold three opportunities for the men's and women's squads to show off their relay prowess. Each crew will compete in the spring medley, 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay events. The sprint medley will be comprised of a 200-meter, 200-meter, 400-meter and 800-meter leg - in that order - and all three of those races will be run on Saturday (April 7).
