GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Tulane track and field program got off to a good start at the Pepsi Florida Relays on Friday (April 6) on the Percy Beard Track inside of James G. Pressly Stadium. Ana Ruzevic claimed her third straight javelin title on the opening day of competition, while four other Green Wave women's competitors took to the track.
Ruzevic had a steady performance in her specialty event and posted six throws of 42 meters or betters in the event. Her second throw of the evening landed 47.84-meter away from the point of release to give her a second place overall finish behind unattached participant Karlee McQuillen's throw of 51.28. It is the third collegiate title of the season for Ruzevic who topped two Conference USA competitors and three foes from the state of Louisiana.
Kasey Rodgers opened the meet with a 24th place showing in the 100 meter event. The senior covered the straight-away in 11.79 - her second fastest non-wind aided time of the season - and placed sixth in the second heat. Overall, she finished ahead of three of the four C-USA opponents and owned the 18th fastest collegiate time in the event.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Zandria Debowles covered the track in 60.82 to claim the seventh heat of the event. The time was the 27th fastest in the field and was the 19th best collegiate time on the day. The senior now has two times of under 61-seconds this season, with a season-best time of 60.77 coming at the LSU Relays to then March.
Katherine Crabtree set a new personal best in the 5,000 meter when she covered the twelve and one-half laps around the oval in 18:09.30. The time was four seconds faster than her previous best which she set at the LSU Relays on March 23, 2012. It was the second straight PR in the event for the junior and gave her a 20th place overall finish.
Johanna Gretschel also competed on the track for the Green Wave and posted a 34th place showing among the field in the 1,500 meter. Gretschel wasn't able to post a career-best time, but did run her third straight race at the distance in under 4:50, breaking the tape in 4:47.15.
