
Volleyball Drops Three-Set Decision to Texas State

BEAUMONT, Texas - The Green Wave could grab the lead only twice in their match versus Texas State in their first match of the day at the Lamar Invitational as the Tulane volleyball team fell in three sets. The Bobcats controlled most of the match to hand the Olive and Blue a loss by scores of 19-25, 21-25, 16-25.
Cori Martone topped the ten-kill plateau for the fifth straight match and led all players with 14 kills, but no other Green Wave player was able to collect more than six kills. Martone also paced the squad with nine digs and narrowly missed her fourth double-double of the year.
In the opening set, the two teams traded the first eight points and then responded with a mini scoring run to sit knotted at eight points. The Bobcats raddled off 11 of the next 13 points to take control of the set and the Green Wave could get no closer than four points the rest of way in the 25-19 setback. Martone had five kills in the opening set, while four other Green Wave attackers added two kills apiece. The 13 kills in the set were the most by the Olive and Blue and enabled them to post a match-high .222 hitting percentage in the set.
Texas State led from the get-go in the second set and eventually built a six point led on when Izabela Grot committed the attacking error to make it 12-6. The lead shrink to two points twice in the set, including at 23-21 when Weaver converted one of her three kills in the set, but the Bobcats closed it out with back-to-back kills to take the 2-0 advantage.
Olivia Utt gave Tulane just their second lead of the afternoon to start the third set, but TSU would eventually race out to an early 8-3 edge. The Texas State lead swelled to nine points on when Alexandra Simms connected on a kill to make it 14-5 and the Olive and Blue would get no closer than four points the remainder of the set. Martone posted four kills in the set, but the Olive and Blue attack mustered only eight total kills and had eight attacking errors.
Mel Mandelbaum handed out 18 assists on the night and added five digs, while Weaver was second on the TU roster with six kills and eight digs.
