TULSA, Okla. - Tulane men's tennis junior Dominik Koepfer, the 98th ranked singles player in the nation by the ITA, became the Green Wave student-athlete to reach the ITA All-American Main Draw in over a decade with a victory on Wednesday morning in the final qualifying round at Tulsa University's Case Tennis Center.
Koepfer defeated Logan Staggs of Northwestern University, 6-4, 6-1, to become the first Tulane player since Michael Kogan participated in the ITA All-American Main Draw in 2003.
"I can't say enough about Dominik," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "He has worked non-stop since he got here two years ago and we've watched him consistently develop. Last year he earned his way into the qualifying draw but couldn't get out of the first round and this year he's beaten three top ranked players to qualify for this prestigious event. He can actually quantify his hard work over the past year and see direct results, which should help a lot in confidence building.
"Staggs was a very strong player who was difficult to play. He was one of the top recruits in the country last year and has been ranked as high as No. 2 in the USA for each of the last two years. He was really good at mixing up the pace and staying in the point with good defense," added Booras. "Dominik did a great job of staying disciplined throughout the match to stick to his game plan and mix in the right amount of offense and defense to break him down. Sometimes against this type of player you can get the tendency to lose patience and over hit to end the point, but under the pressure he showed a lot of maturity to believe in himself so he could execute well. I'm very pleased how consistently he has done this over his past two tournaments."
Koepfer will open the Main Draw on Thursday in Tulsa. The bracket will be announced later on Wednesday.
