AUBURN, Ala. - Alex Van Cott and Constantin Schmitz, members of the Tulane men's tennis team, each advanced to the round of 32 with victories on Thursday at the 2014 ITA Southern Regional held at Auburn University's Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Alex Van Cott won twice on the first day of the tournament that features 128 singles players from around the region. The junior from Unadilla, New York, defeated Zach Wilder of Ole Miss, 6-1, 6-0, in the first round and then upended Lukas Clemens of Nicholls State, 6-1, 6-4, in the round of 64.
Schmitz, a freshman from Remegan, Germany, received an opening-round bye before getting past Alabama's Sam Edwards, 6-3, 6-1, in the round of 64.
Both Schmitz and Alex Van Cott will play on Friday in the round of 32.
"All in all it was a pretty decent first day at regionals. We had a few solid wins and a couple of tough losses," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "Alex did a great job of maintaining a very good level of play through a long day of 3 matches. Constantin showed us another level of tennis he has in his repertoire today to come up with a very solid win. It's nice to see him settle in a bit more each week as the semester progresses and play some great tennis like he did today."
Chi-Shan Jao fell in the round of 64 after receiving an opening-round bye, while Ian Van Cott lost his first-round match.
The doubles team of Dominik Koepfer and Schmitz had a first-round bye and will open Friday morning in the round of 32.
