Men's Tennis Gets 12 Wins at FGCU Fall Invitational

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Five members of the Tulane men's tennis team collected a total of 12 wins over the three-day Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) Fall Invitational held at the FGCU Tennis Center that concluded on Sunday.
The Green Wave earned eight singles wins, including three be freshman Constantin Schmitz, and four doubles win during the event that included student-athletes from 10 other schools, including Arkansas, Barry University, Boston College, UCF, Florida Atlantic, Nicholls State, Princeton, Saint Leo, Texas-Arlington and the host FGCU.
"For some of our guys this was their last fall tournament," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "This was a great way to finish off their fall season. It's nice to see them continually develop since the beginning of September like they have."
Schmitz earned a pair of wins in the singles Draw A on Friday with a 6-1, 6-1, decision over UCF's Chris Barrus and a 7-6, 4-6 6-0, win over Princeton's Alexander Day. He then upended Barry University's Ahmed Triki, 6-2, 6-4, in the semifinal on Saturday.
The Ramagen, Germany, native then fell, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2, in the championship match to Barry's Fabian Groetsch.
Sophomore Sebastian Rey and junior Alex Van Cott each collected a pair of singles wins during the weekend. After falling in his Draw A opening match, Rey defeated Boston College's Hark Workman, 6-4, 6-7, 10-7, and Nicholls State's Partha Adavelly, 7-6, 6-3, and in the consolation bracket.
Alex Van Cott earned a first-round win in Draw B, 6-2, 6-0, over Boston College's Kent Mukai and posted a consolation win over FGSU's Tianyu Bao, 4-6, 6-2, 10-8.
Ian Van Cott teamed with his twin Alex to post a pair of doubles win as well and claimed the consolation bracket title. The duo upended Kyle Childree and Kent Mukai of Boston College, 8-6, in the consolation semifinal and then beat Kieran Cronin and Bernard Wezeman of Nicholls State, 8-5, in the title match.
Tulane's other doubles pair of Rey and Schmitz earned two doubles Draw A wins before falling. The pair got past Boston College's Matt Wagner and Hank Workman, 8-2, in the first round and then defeated Jovan Parlic and Santiago Munoz of Arkansas, 8-1, in the second round.
Green Wave junior Dominik Koepfer will play this week at the 2014 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York, that gets underway on Thursday. A few other Tulane student-athletes will head to Niceville, Florida, for the three-day USTA Futures Tournament that begins on Friday.
