FLUSHING, N.Y. - Dominik Koepfer, a junior on the Tulane men's tennis team, is set to complete for the singles title at the 2014 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship that gets underway on Thursday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Koepfer earned one of the 32 spots in the tournament by reaching the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Main Draw last month on Tulsa. The Furtwangen, Germany, native is 8-2 in singles this fall with a 5-1 mark against rank opponents, including wins against No. 9 and No. 40.
"Playing the Indoor National Championships is going to be a great experience for Dominik," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "He's really done a fantastic job this semester to earn a spot in this draw of the top 32 players in the nation. It's a nice way to finish off the fall semester, to be able to compete against the top players in the country."
Hosted by Columbia University, this is the fifth consecutive year the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships will be held at the home of the US Open. The men's singles field competing for the ITA's final national title of the fall showcases eight of the Top 10 players from the ITA Division I Men's Preseason Singles Rankings. Twenty-six different colleges and universities will be represented in the 32-player singles draw.
Koepfer, who was ranked 98th in the nation by the ITA before the fall season began, will face off against the No. 7 seed in the field, Cameron Norrie from TCU on Thursday at 9:45 a.m. CT.
"It'll be important for Dominik to stay focused on the task at hand, and what got him here, and let the outcome take care of itself," Booras added. "If he does that well enough he'll give himself the best opportunity to be successful."
In addition to Koepfer competing, his Green Wave teammates Sebastian Rey and Chi-Shan Jao will be closing the fall season in Niceville, Fla., at the USTA Futures Tournament held at the Bluewater Bay Tennis Center and gets underway on Friday.
