Saturday's game marked the fourth meeting between Tulane and Duke on the gridiron. With the loss, the Green Wave are now 2-2 all-time against the Blue Devils.
Freshman RB Dontrell Hilliard's five-yard rushing touchdown with 7:03 left in the first quarter was the first score of his career.
Sophomore RB Lazedrick Thompson scored on a four-yard run in the third quarter for his second career rushing touchdown. It also marks the second straight game Thompson has scored a rushing touchdown after recording the first of his career last week against Southeastern Louisiana.
Thompson finished the game with 124 rushing yards on 19 carries, marking his first 100-plus yard game of his career. His previous career-best game was 30 yards on 13 carries last week against Southeastern Louisiana. Thompson's total was Tulane's second 100-yard rushing game of the season. He joined Sherman Badie's 215-yard performance in the season opener at Tulsa.
With a an interception and fumble recovery by senior FS Sam Scofield, Tulane has forced multiple turnovers in all four games so far in 2014 to bring the season turnover total to 10. The Green Wave have now recorded multiple-turnover contests in their last 13 games. The last time Tulane did not have a multiple-turnover game defensively came on Sept. 21, 2013 at Syracuse.
Sophomore linebacker Nico Marley led the team with a career-high 12 tackles (3 solo, 9 assists) at Duke, and also added 1.5 stops for lost yardage and a forced fumble. It marks his third career double digit tackles game. He collected 11 against Georgia Tech this season and had 10 stops at Rice on Nov. 30, 2013.
The Green Wave defense had five tackles for loss against Duke, marking the third time in as many games in 2014 to have at least four tackles for loss. The Wave have now tallied at least four tackles behind the line of scrimmage in each of the last 18 games dating back to the 2012 season finale. The last time Tulane had less than three tackles for loss was on Nov. 17, 2012, when the Green Wave had one sack against East Carolina.
Six Tulane players extended their double-digit scoring streaks on Saturday at Duke: junior SS Darion Monroe (29), junior CB Lorenzo Doss (18), senior FS Sam Scofield (17), junior OL Arturo Uzdavinis (17) and senior OL Sean Donnelly (15).
A pair of Tulane student-athletes made their first collegiate starts on Saturday at Duke as freshmen Terren Encalade and Leondre James each took the field as receivers on the Green Wave's first play on offense. The duo is two of 27 players who have made their first collegiate starts to date in 2014.
Redshirt freshman OT Kenneth Santa Maria made his collegiate debut during Tulane's opening drive of Saturday's game at Duke. Santa Maria is the 20th first-time player of the Green Wave this season.
Tulane's game captains for Saturday's contest at Duke were senior FB Dante Butler representing the offense, sophomore LB Nico Marley representing the defense and senior Matt Marfisi representing the special teams.
Senior WR Carlos Wilson carried the "18" flag to lead the Green Wave onto the field prior to the game.
