
Men's Tennis Has Successful Weekend

NEW ORLEANS - After struggling on the first day of the Crimson Tide Four-in-the-Fall, the four members of the Tulane men's tennis team enjoyed some success on Saturday, including claiming a pair of consolation bracket titles in Tuscaloosa, Ala., while Sebastian Rey and Chi-Shan Jao each reached the fourth and final round of the ITA All-American Pre-Qualifying before being edged out in Tulsa, Okla.
All four of Tulane's squad in Alabama lost their opening singles matches on Friday, but Ian Van Cott rebounded to win three straight singles matches on Saturday to earn the Singles 2 Draw consolation title. Alex Van Cott earned two wins in the consolation bracket on Saturday as well.
In Tulsa, both Jao and Rey received opening round byes in singles before claiming second-round wins. The pair then also won in the third round, but were eliminated in the final round.
Jao got past Georgia Tech's Carlos Benito, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, in the second round on Saturday, while Rey beat North Carolina's Stuart DePaolo, 7-5, 6-1.
Jao opened Sunday with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, win over Justin Roberts of South Florida, but then was edged out by Clemson's Alejandro Augusto, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, in the final to reach the qualifier.
Rey got past Georgia's Peter Bertran, 5-7, 6-4, 7-6, in the third round on Sunday before falling to Northwestern's Strong Kirchheimer, 6-2, 6-2, in the final.
In Alabama, Ian Van Cott opened Saturday with a 6-4, 6-4, win over Samford's Trey Carter in the consolation quarterfinals. He then earned a tough come-from-behind, 0-6, 6-3, 6-2, win over Notre Dame's Brendon Kempin in the semifinals before upending UAB's Donovan McSeveney, 6-3, 6-2, in the consolation final.
Alex Van Cott defeated Florida State's Joao Gauer, 6-2, 6-4, in the consolation quarterfinal. He then beat Samford's Fares Kilani, 6-2, 6-0, after suffering a semifinal loss.
The Green Wave twins also paired up to earn the Doubles 2 Draw consolation title with one win on Friday and another on Saturday. After falling to Florida State's Jake Albo and Jose Gracia, 8-6, in the opening round of doubles, the Van Cott's rattled off a pair of wins, including an 8-7 win over Alabama's Danny Kerznerman and Nikko Madregallejo and an 8-5 victory over Rice's Srikar Alla and Gustavo Gonzalez in the consolation final.
Tulane's Dominik Koepfer, the 98th ranked singles player, and the doubles team of Koepfer and Jao, the 30th ranked doubles team, will compete beginning Monday at the ITA All-American Qualifyer in Tulsa, Okla.
