TULSA, Okla. - Tulane men's tennis junior Dominik Koepfer, the 98th ranked singles player in the nation by the ITA, earned a second-round win at the 2014 ITA All-American Qualifying on Tuesday at Tulsa University's Case Tennis Center, while he and sophomore Chi-Shan Jao, the 30th ranked doubles team, fell in the opening round of qualifying.
Koepfer defeated the 56th-ranked George Goldhoff of the University of Texas in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3, to earn a spot in the third and final qualifying round on Wednesday morning.
The Green Wave junior will face Northwestern's Logan Staggs at 10 a.m. CT on Wednesday. The winner will advance to the ITA All-American Main Draw that gets underway on Thursday.
"What a great singles match today by Dominik," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "Goldhoff is a top player for Texas who made the quarterfinals of this event last year. So going into the match we knew we were in for a real tough battle.
"The first set today was one of the best sets I've seen in college tennis in a long time," Booras added. "These guys were trading off winners all the way through the tiebreaker. It was nice to see Dominik raise his level and then be able to play like that throughout the match, especially when it got tight, and close the guy out in two sets."
Hours later, Koepfer teamed with Jao and couldn't overcome a first-set loss in the, 6-4, 2-6, 10-6, loss to Virginia's Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and Mac Styslinger, in the first round on Tuesday afternoon.
"Doubles was a good fight today," Booras said. "The guys played pretty well with just a couple of dropped points in the first set and third set tiebreak keeping them from pulling it out. I was pleased with how they responded in the second set after losing a real tight first set. The tiebreak for the third set was a bit of a crapshoot that just didn't go our way. We stuck to our game plan but the guys from Virginia just executed better on a few points."
