SKILLMAN, N.J. - Tulane men's tennis standout Dominik Koepfer is currently in Flushing, New York, gearing up for 2015 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. The third major national championship tournament of the fall will get underway on Thursday, Nov. 12, at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Koepfer, the No. 10 preseason ranked player in the country, was awarded the No. 3 overall seed of the 32-man main singles draw. The Germany native is slated to begin his run at 1:30 p.m. CT on Thursday against Ohio State's Chris Diaz, who was an at-large selection for the tournament.
"This is such a great tournament," Tulane head coach Mark Booras explained. "The USTA and ITA always do a top notch job of hosting a great event at one of the greatest facilities in the US. We're honored to be a part of it again."
If the top seeds hold out in the bracket, Koepfer could earn two possible revenge matches, starting with the quarterfinal round vs. No. 8 seed Jared Hiltzik of Illinois, who previously defeated Koepfer in the second round of the 2015 NCAA Singles Championships last spring. In addition, the semifinal round could see a rematch from the ITA All-American Championships final between Koepfer and No. 1 seed Thai-Son Kwiatkowski of Virginia.
"The draw here is obviously very deep and Dom has a tough first round against a solid opponent," Booras added. "He's had a bit of a break since the last tournament so I know he's eager to get back on the court and compete his hardest for Tulane."
This fall, Koepfer has compiled a 7-2 record, reaching the semifinals of the ITA/Oracle Master's Tournament and final at the ITA All-American Championships. Along the way, the senior has defeated six foes ranked in the top-55, including four in the top-25.
After Thursday's opening round, the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships will play two rounds Friday, followed by the semifinals on Saturday and the final on Sunday. Furthermore, fans will be able to watch the semis and final live on ESPN3 with Patrick McEnroe and Stephen Amritraj on the call.
