NICEVILLE, Fla. - After four straight wins in qualifying sent Tulane men's tennis sophomore Constantin Schmitz into the main draw of the Niceville Futures Tournament, the Green Wave standout kept his momentum rolling on Wednesday, knocking off No. 2 overall seed Deiton Baughman in straight-sets to advance. As a result, Schmitz achieved quite the tennis milestone in earning his first career ATP point.
Thus, not only did Schmitz collect his first ATP point, but also did so by defeating the No. 354th ranked player in the world in Baughman. The sophomore recorded the win via a 6-4, 6-4, result.
"Really proud of what Constantin did today," Tulane assistant coach James McKie said. "To go out there in his first futures event and pick up his first ATP point against a guy ranked No. 354 in the world is huge. He just believed in himself, played really solid and disciplined from the baseline and ultimately broke him down and forced him to make mistakes."
Up next for Schmitz in the second round will be 25-year old Andrew Carter, who advanced via a 6-3, 7-6(5) win over Martin Joyce. Be sure to follow Tulane on Twitter @GreenWaveMTenn for all updates and time announcements for Schmitz's run in the tournament.
