Friday will mark the fifth-consecutive year Tulane track and field director Eric Peterson and his program will take part in the BSC Panther Icebreaker. The Green Wave have had tremendous success in the past at the competition, and it has served as an opportunity for Peterson and his staff to assess where the team's veterans stand, as well as get a glimpse of the newcomers.
"The kids have been working really hard throughout the fall and the early part of the winter, and for the entire team, this meet provides an opportunity for everyone to test themselves after a long training period," stated Peterson. "We feel good about the progress the team is making. We are looking forward to seeing how everybody performs during the early part of the season."
A handful of returners who will kick-off their season on Friday, like seniors Lilla McMillan and Tamika Brazzel who will compete in the 200 meter dash and the long jump, respectively. Brazzel will also take part in the 60-meter hurdles.
Two seasoned veterans in juniors Mary Carson Pitts and Emma Staisloff will take part in the pole vault, joining Brazzel as the lone returning jumpers for the Green Wave on the weekend.
Two returners who missed last year due to injury will compete for the first time in almost a year when Jessica Adamson and Sara Kebede will take part in a few relays at the end of the competition.
"We have an exciting mixture of older veteran athletes like Lilla and Tamika," added Peterson. "They are two seniors we will count on heavily this year. We also have a group of improving and maturing athletes like Mary Carson and Emma, as well as kids coming back from injuries like Jessica Adamson and Sara Kebede that I'm excited to see."
In addition to the veterans, a plethora of new faces that will serve as the backbone of the Green Wave program for years to come will get their first taste of collegiate track and field.
Redshirt-senior Jasmine Blocker, a recent transfer from Princeton, will compete alongside rookie Kyra Ness-Lanckriet in the 400 meter dash. Two freshmen in Lunden Graham and Mckenzie Melius will take part in the 800 meter run.
Three newcomers in Mckenzie Hutchinson, Ellen Upton and Celeste White – a junior transfer from Southern - will run the one mile while freshman Jessica Duckett and redshirt-freshman Skylin Harbin will join Brazzel in the 60-meter hurdles.
Four new pole vaulters will compete for the first time as collegiate athletes as Rose Brutkiewicz, Luisa Hellriegel, Gabriella Leuthner and Rebekah Markel will don the Olive and Blue on Friday. In the throws department, freshmen Zharia Jeffries and Jordan McClendon will compete in the shot put and weight throw.
"We are going to be really deep in the pole vault and hurdles, and that represents a lot of our newcomers," stated Peterson. "We've got new throwers too, so it's a good mixture of older, experienced athletes and kids who will be starting for us. This is an excellent meet for that, and we are very much looking forward to it."
Following Friday's meet, the Green Wave will break for the winter recess before reconvening in January. Tulane will head up I-10 for the LSU Purple Tiger meet on Jan. 8.
