Tulane Golfers Notch Runner-Up Finish at UCF Challenge
Feb 10, 2015 | Women's Golf
NEW ORLEANS - Tulane's title bid for the 2015 UCF Challenge fell short by just one stroke today as the Green Wave combined for a 3-over 291 total and a runner-up finish at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.
Senior Gemma Dryburgh closed out one of the best performances of her storied career with a 1-under 71 effort today, but more importantly she finished with an 8-under 208, and tied her own school record for the lowest 54-hole total by an individual. Dryburgh finished one stroke short of the co-leaders in third place.
Junior Silvia Garces completed the best tournament of her collegiate career with a fourth place effort. Garces was 1-over on the day, but turned in a 7-under 209 for the event, including her record-setting 7-under 65 during Monday's second round.
Junior Emily Penttila tied Dryburgh for the lowest round by a Green Wave golfer today and posted a 19th-place finish to give the Green Wave three players in the top 20.
"This was a fantastic record-setting week for us and as a coach you are always trying to reach your goals and break records," Tulane head coach Lorne Don said. "We beat five of the six teams ranked ahead of us in this tournament and played toe-to-toe with Virginia, which is a very good Top-15 program. Gemma and Siliva were so good for 54 holes this week. They really struck the ball exceptionally well for the most part and gave themselves a lot of opportunities, which I thought they made the most of. Emily played very well but really I am proud of all five of them. This was a great way to start the spring season."
Virginia edged Tulane for the team title, while the duo of Vanderbilt's Jennifer Hahn and Virginia's Lauren Diaz-Yi each finished 9-under to share individual medalist honors.
Tulane's 13-under 851 total is the best 54-hole team total in school history.
Tulane will take a brief break before hosting the 2015 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship, Feb. 22-24, at the English Turn Golf & Country Club in New Orleans.
"We came up a little bit short of winning this tournament but we look forward to hosting our tournament in a few weeks. The Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship is a tournament we are very proud to host and once again we have such a great field coming to play us on our home course, and we hope to walk away with the championship trophy," Don said.
