BATON ROUGE - The 51st-ranked Tulane men's tennis team had its six-match winning streak halted by 40th-ranked LSU, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at W.T. "Dub" Robinson Stadium.
The Green Wave (9-2) were tied 2-2 with the Tigers (9-1) after doubles and the first three singles matches, but LSU took two straight singles matches to claim the victory and remain unbeaten at home this spring.
"LSU has a very solid team that pushed us to the limit for nearly four hours today," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "It was a real battle out there from start to finish. Hats off to LSU for a well earned victory.
"We had some good opportunities in doubles where we jumped ahead real big at No. 2 and No. 3 but couldn't close them out. In singles our guys did a good job staying in the matches even after losing four first sets. Jao did a great job today getting us on the board quick by beating a guy who's had his number the last few matches. It was nice to see Sebastian and Alex come back to win after being down a set."
Sophomore's Chi-Shan Jao and Sebastian Rey, along with junior Alex Van Cott each earned singles wins to give Tulane three points.
Jao got the Green Wave on the board with a, 6-0, 6-3, win over Boris Arias on court four, while Rey tied the match up at 2-2 with his, 3-6, 6-0, 6-3, victory against Andrew Korinek on court five. Van Cott collected a, 6-3, 6-3, win over No. 115 Tam Trinh, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, on court three for his second straight win over a ranked opponent.
"I'm proud of the way our guys responded to the challenge on the road against our in state rival," Booras added. "They fought so hard today but came up a little short. And thanks to all the Tulane fans who made the trip up the road to support us, we appreciate you all."
The Green Wave continues the road swing next Friday when they travel to Oxford, Mississippi, to face 19th-ranked Ole Miss at 4 p.m. CT.
