NEW ORLEANS - For the third straight year, the No. 17 Green Wave sand volleyball program will host the Tulane Pelican Classic. The six team event, which gets started at 9 a.m. CT, on both Friday and Saturday, will be held at Coconut Beach in Kenner (if weather permitting) and features: UAB, Spring Hill College, UNO, Louisiana-Monroe, and Mercer.
"Playing at home provides a great opportunity for our fans to see our amazing athletes compete in one of the most dynamic sports in the world," Tulane head coach Wayne Holly said. "We're thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase our great team to local fans in New Orleans."
The Wave are coming off of a 3-1 opening weekend out in Tuscon, in which they defeated LSU, Arizona State and TCU, before falling to No. 14 Arizona. Sophomores Miah Diirell and Sarah Strasner emerged with the most wins with a 3-1 record at the No. 5 position.
Also seeing time and earning a 2-2 split on the weekend were Courtney Liddle and Annie Shurtz on court four, Hannah Holmes and Grace Weaver on court three, Tea Juric and Jackie Wegner on court two, and the freshmen tandem of Lan Nguyen and Madeline Mertz on court one.
"We hope the fans show their appreciation for how hard these student-athletes train by coming out and supporting them with a big presence and a lot of noise," Holly added.
UAB is 0-1 on the year after losing 4-1 to South Carolina. Meanwhile, UL-Monroe is 1-1, UNO is 0-3, and Mercer is 1-3, with the Bears lone win coming against the Privateers. Finally, Spring Hill will be kicking off its season this weekend.
The Tulane Pelican Classic is located at 100 Coconut Beach Ct., in Kenner, and admission is free. In fact, free koozies will be distributed to those Green Wave fans in attendance, while supplies last.
