Mar 22, 2015 | Men's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS - Back in the friendly confines of the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center, the Tulane's men's tennis team (13-6) delivered a 4-2 win over Rice (7-11) on Sunday afternoon. As a result, the Green Wave remain unbeaten at home, improving to a 9-0 record.
"Great team effort by the boys," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "It's always nice to get a win over one of our rivals, and even nicer to be able to do it after losing the doubles point."
Tulane dug itself into a 1-0 hole after dropping the doubles point with 6-4 losses on both courts one and three. Meanwhile, Alex and Ian Van Cott's match on court two vs. Zach Yablon and Jamie Malik went unfinished at 6-6.
The Green Wave quickly turned it around in singles, claiming four of the six first sets and eventually taking three consecutive match victories.
Chi-Shan Jao tied the team score at one with a 6-1, 6-3 win vs. Yablon on court six. Then, Sebastian Rey efficiently recorded a 6-2, 6-1 win over David Warren on court four. Next, No. 13 Dominik Koepfer tallied his fifth straight singles victory with a 6-1, 6-4 performance vs. Srikar Alla on court one.
Yet, Rice did not go unanswered, cutting the team score to 3-2 after Max Andrews recorded a 6-3, 6-7(3), 6-3 win over Constantin Schmitz on court two.
"I'm impressed how these guys are continually investing in the process of growing into a solid team," Booras stated. "Jao, Dominik, and Seb did a nice job getting us ahead 3-1. Alex and Constantin did a great job turning their matches around to get to the third set."
With the fate of the match still up for grabs, Tulane's Ian Van Cott put the finishing touches on the victory, via a 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-2 win vs. Gustavo Gonzalez on court five.
"Ian showed a lot of character today coming back from a break, down in the third set to win six straight games and clinch it for us," Booras explained. "He's been putting the right kind of work in, on and off the court, and it's nice to see some fruits of his labors arrive in a tough match like today."
Up next, the Olive and Blue will compete in their home finale on Thursday, March 26, at 3 p.m. CT vs. Dartmouth.
