NEW ORLEANS -- What a difference a year can make for the Tulane women's tennis program. A year after being the No. 15 seed in the 2014 Conference USA Tournament, the 16-8 and 47th--ranked Green Wave will enter the American Conference Championships as the No. 2 seed, earning a first round bye. The first round of the tournament will get underway this Wednesday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
"Last year was challenging for a number of reasons and we were not use to having that type of year," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk explained. "We were a No. 15 seed last year and that was out of character for Tulane. We all sat down together over the summer and revamped, and I knew the schedule that I had crafted for this year would be difficult for such a young team, but I also believed in this team. Being a No. 2 seed in the American Conference is huge for this program and only reiterates what I've always known- that we're very talented and fighters and we'll get the job done."
The Green Wave will officially kick things off on Thursday at 3 p.m. CT, awaiting the winner of No. 7 Temple and No. 10 Cincinnati. Thursday's winner will advance to the semis on Friday where they'll most likely face No. 3 seed Tulsa on its home courts at Noon. Furthermore, the title match is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Olive and Blue went 3-1 against conference opponents in 2015, defeating the likes of Cincinnati, USF and SMU. The Wave's lone loss came at the hands of No. 1 seed Houston back on March 17.
"Obviously, we're excited," Sisk said. "I feel like I say that so much this year, but the girls have done such an amazing job. We felt like this was a nice reward for the hard work we've put in and the challenging schedule that we've played. We have our hands full but we're excited about it."
