Men's Tennis' Schmitz Ends Memorable Run in Final at Niceville Futures
Nov 13, 2016 | Men's Tennis
NICEVILLE, Fla. – In what will certainly go down in the Tulane men's tennis record books, junior Constantin Schmitz spent the last week winning seven straight matches to emerge from qualifying at the Niceville Futures Tournament to advance all the way to the final of the main draw. Unfortunately for Schmitz, his run stopped there, falling 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 to Mina Gianni of France for the pro tournament championship.
"What a fantastic tournament from Connie this week," Tulane head coach Mark Booras stated. "To come all the way from qualifying and make it to the final in a professional event was a great step forward in his development. He had some huge wins that have definitely built his confidence and shown him the level he can play at. I'm very proud of the way he represented Tulane this week."
Reminder that in the second round of the main draw, Schmitz cruised past the ITF Junior No. 3 ranked player in the world Felix Auger-Alliassime of Canada, 6-0, 6-2, then in the quarters, Schmitz dispatched No. 332 world ranked Maxime Chazal of France, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Schmitz then booked his ticket to the final with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(6) thriller against No. 3 seed and No. 446 world ranked Jose Statham of New Zealand.
