Five Green Wave freshmen make their debuts
MATCH ONE BOX | MATCH TWO BOX
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane men's tennis team (2-0) made its 2017 debut in strong fashion on Tuesday afternoon, sweeping its doubleheader vs Alcorn State, 6-0, in match one, followed by 7-0, in match two. Five freshmen also made their spring dual match debuts out at City Park this afternoon, as Luis Erlenbusch, Ewan Moore, Tim Ruetzel, Chase Schupp and Jonathan Star all picked up their first wins in a Green Wave uniform.
"That's the biggest thing with these season openers is getting back acquainted with the dual match formats," Tulane head coach Mark Booras stated. "This was the first time for us playing as a team so it was really nice for our five freshmen in particular. Great start for us."
Eric Wagner and Moore went 2-0 on the day in singles, with the latter earning his second victory at the No. 1 position in match No. 2. Ruetzel posted the most dominant performance on the day, recording a 6-0, 6-0, win on court five in match No. 1 vs Suyash Gupta.
In other debuts, Rey and Chi-Shan Jao paired up for the first time in doubles, notching a 6-0 win on court one. The Wave then clinched the doubles point in match No. 2 via a Constantin Schmitz/Tyler Schick 6-0 sweep over on court three.
Now with some dual experience under their belt, the Green Wave will head West for ITA Kick-off Weekend in Berkeley, California. Up first, Tulane will challenge Pepperdine on Friday, Jan. 27 at 1 p.m. CT. If successful, the Wave will clash with the winner of Cal Poly vs No. 5 California on Saturday.
