GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Green Wave volleyball team closed out their 2016 road campaign on a high note on Saturday afternoon in the Minges Coliseum, defeating ECU three sets to one on the Pirates' home court. With the win, Tulane improves to 17-13 on the year and 9-9 in the American Athletic Conference with just two matches remaining.
HOW IT WAS WON
Tulane got on the board early in Greenville, notching the first points of the match and starting the day off with a 5-2 lead over the Pirates. The Green Wave would hold the lead for the remainder of the set, leading by as many as seven points midway through the contest, coming away with a 25-17 victory in set one. Set two would also swing heavily in Tulane's favor, with the Pirates playing a closer game until the Green Wave scored four straight points later on to move to 2-0 in the match on a 25-22 victory.
With a 2-0 lead coming back from the set break, the Green Wave were slow to resume their previous pace of play, starting out set three in an 8-2 hole. Tulane staved off set point for three straight points but ultimately dropped the third set 25-20.
The Green Wave would get back on track in the fourth set of the day, starting things out with a 5-1 lead, but the Pirates would bounce back, recording six straight points to take an 8-7 lead in the set. The ECU lead would be short-lived, however, as Tulane would jump back on top 14-13, carrying the lead to a 25-22 final and putting away a 3-1 match victory.
On the day, junior right-side hitter Sarah Ray led the Green Wave offense with 14 kills, hitting .419 for her third match above .400 this season. Senior outside hitter Tea Juric was not far behind, with 13 kills of her own and her 15th double-double of the year.
