NEW ORLEANS – Just two matches remain for the Tulane volleyball team, as the Green Wave close out their 2016 campaign this week with a pair of home matches at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. Tulane will host UCF on Wednesday, Nov. 23 and USF on Friday, Nov. 25, honoring this year's class of five seniors following the Friday match. Both matches begin at noon.
With most of the 2016 season in the books, Tulane volleyball has sported the best turnaround in the nation this year, moving up nearly 150 spots in the RPI. The Green Wave opened the season at 237 and have since broken into the top 100, now sitting at no. 91. In addition, first-year head coach Jim Barnes and his staff have moved the team up in the rankings of the American Athletic Conference, now sitting at no. 5 compared to last-place finishes the past two years.Â
QUOTE
"Right now we're the top team in the nation in terms of improvement, and we want these two matches to honor what our seniors have done to help turn the program around. We're playing two very good opponents. UCF has a lot on the line in this match, and they're a good team that will want to have some vengeance after we swept them on the road. It will be a heated two games, and we look forward to honoring our seniors."
--Tulane head coach Jim Barnes
LAST TIME OUT
The Green Wave hope to close out the season on a high note following a 1-1 performance last weekend on the road. Tulane fell in a disappointing 0-3 loss to a tough Cincinnati team on Thursday evening but turned things around on Saturday afternoon in Greenville, North Carolina, winning a 3-1 decision over ECU in a match that saw nine Green Wave service aces.
The UCF Knights also had a 1-1 outing last weekend, going five sets with Temple on Friday night in Orlando but dropping the contest 2-3. The Knights then defeated UConn 3-1 on Sunday afternoon to close out their home schedule.
USF played two quick 3-0 decisions last weekend in Tampa, sweeping the visiting UConn Huskies in three straight sets on Friday night before falling by the same margin to Temple on Sunday afternoon.
SERIES HISTORY
UCF leads the all-time series 14-9 and has a 6-2 record in New Orleans. Earlier this year, Tulane picked up a road sweep over the Knights in Orlando en route to a 2-0 weekend in Florida.
The Bulls hold a 26-6 record over Tulane, with an 8-2 record in New Orleans. In October, the Green Wave won 3-1 in Tampa.
