NEW ORLEANS - The curtain raised on the 2016-17 season for Tulane men's basketball with an 80-58 victory over Loyola New Orleans in an exhibition contest at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
Sophomore guard Melvin Frazier led all scorers with 20 points, 11 of those came in the second half. Redshirt senior guard Malik Morgan displayed his skills on both ends of the floor with 18 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Five of Morgan's boards came off the defensive glass.
The Green Wave posted a solid night from three-point range, going 10-of-19. Morgan was a perfect 4-of-4, while Frazier hit four of his six shots from downtown.
"I thought we had some really good play from our veteran players," said head coach Mike Dunleavy, Sr. "They did a good job of stabilizing us and trying to get some of the guys here for the first time through (the game). I don't think we executed as well as we did in our scrimmage, but overall I thought the effort was good."
Tulane never trailed in the game, jumping out to an 11-2 advantage within the first four minutes. The Wave maintained the lead throughout the half and extended it to double digits with just under a minute remaining before the break.
The second half was more of the same as the lead extended to 22 with last points scored in the game. In addition to Frazier and Morgan posting double-digit scoring nights, redshirt junior Cameron Reynolds poured in 12 points and freshman guard Colin Slater contributed 10 points.
Next up, the Green Wave tip off the regular season on Friday, Nov. 11 against North Carolina at the Smoothie King Center. Tipoff for that game is set for 8 p.m. on ESPNU.
