WTN Secures Win in First Conference Showdown

HOUSTON - Not only securing their first conference victory of the season, but their first road win as well, the Tulane women's tennis team (4-9, 1-0) out-dueled the Houston Cougars (4-10, 1-1), 4-3, on Friday afternoon at the John E. Hoff Courts. After dropping the doubles point, the Green Wave rallied in singles play with victories from Kyla Klier, Jacqui Katz, Meredith Maltby and Naz Karagoz.
"We started really slow in doubles but really dug our heels in and competed with heart to secure the win," Tulane women's tennis head coach Terri Sisk stated. "I'm proud of the fight we showed today. It's always nice to get a conference win on the road, especially when the team you are competing against is talented. Congrats to Naz for clinching today."
Tulane and Houston went back-and-forth the entire match, as it was eventually tied at 3-3 with court three being the deciding point. Heading into a decisive third set, Karagoz pushed past Tina Rupert, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2, to clinch the match and earn her first dual win of the season.
"Winning 6-3 in the third set is huge for her mentally as these type of matches in the past have haunted her, so this was a huge step for her today," Sisk added.
Next, the Green Wave will stay in Houston where they'll battle their fourth opponent ranked inside the top-25 this season in No. 24 Kansas, on Saturday, at 10 a.m. CT.
