NEW ORLEANS - Tulane's 16th-ranked beach volleyball team came up short in a pair of matches on Wednesday, falling to No. 4 UCLA 5-0 and Florida Atlantic 3-2, at the FAU Duals in Boca Raton, Fla.
Tulane (10-5) will complete its trio of matches in the state of Florida this week with a contest against No. 5 Hawai'i on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. CST in Deland, Fla.
"We're disappointed to take two losses today and because of the way we played against two good teams," Tulane head coach Wayne Holly said. "UCLA beat us with experience, skill and an aggression in serving and offense that we didn't come close to matching.
"As a team, we under-performed greatly- meaning we are not playing to our potential in matches against experienced opponents. With the exception of Maddy and Lan at flight 2, we played too passively and allowed the wind, rather than skills, to dictate our play," Holly added.
Tulane opened the morning against the No. 4 Bruins and was swept for the first time this season.
The Green Wave returned to the courts and fell short in a hard-fought match to FAU. Tulane's sophomore duo of Madeline Mertz and Lan Nguyen won a three-set thriller at the No. 2 flight and the freshmen tandem of Briana Correa and Anna Chin took the No. 6 spot in straight sets.
