Emerson, Ga. - The women of Tulane beach volleyball took to the sand on Friday for day one of the inaugural Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Beach Volleyball Championship hosted by the Lakepoint Sporting Community in Emerson, Ga. The Green Wave went 0-2 on the day, playing hard but ultimately dropping matches to FAU and FIU.
"These were obviously not the results we intended to achieve today," head coach Wayne Holly said. "We're too good to find any solace in being close. We simply need to make more plays and make them consistently in matches other than on the #1 and #2 courts. Those top flights consistently put us in a position to win matches. We need to capitalize on that more often."
The Green Wave started off the day against sixth-seeded FAU, dropping the matchup 3-2. Senior Jackie Wegner and junior Tea Juric took the first matchup to three sets, going head to head with the Owls and nabbing the final set. Sophomores Madeline Mertz and Lan Nguyen swept both sets of the second matchup, giving the Green Wave an early 2-0 lead on FAU. Tulane struggled to compete in the final three matches with the Owls, taking the fourth and fifth matchups to three sets but falling 0-2 in the final game.
In the afternoon, Tulane faced off against No. 3 seeded FIU. The Green Wave once again jumped ahead of the Panthers 2-0 thanks to strong performances from Juric and Wegner and Mertz and Nguyen, but was unable to capitalize on the early lead, dropping the next three matches in two sets apiece.
The Green Wave will be back in action at CCSA Championships tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. as Tulane takes on the No. 2 seed Georgia State.
