CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 31 Tulane men's tennis team's (16-9) historic 2016 campaign came to a close in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon, falling 4-0 to the No. 2 overall seed North Carolina (27-4). The Green Wave capped a spring season in which they not only garnered their first top-30 national ranking since 2005, but also qualified and earned their first NCAA Tournament win in the post-Katrina era as well.
"UNC really brought it and showed why they were No. 1 for most of the year," Tulane head coach Mark Booras stated. "Our guys performed well but we got a slow start and probably respected them too much in the beginning. Once we got our feet in the water and got used to the temperature, we started to play well in doubles and had chances to come back. Same thing happened in singles. Our guys fought for Tulane and what they've done for the whole year is a great body of work."
The Tar Heels jumped on the Green Wave early by earning the doubles point, utilizing their No. 3 ranked pair of Brett Clark and Robert Kelly to clinch against No. 18 Dominik Koepfer and Chi-Shan Jao, 6-4, on court one. In singles, UNC won five of the six first sets, with Koepfer being the exception against No. 26 Brayden Schnur. No. 99 Constantin Schmitz and Jao each fought back in their respective second sets but it was too late, as North Carolina earned straight-set wins on courts three, five and six to advance.
Yet, the Wave's season isn't quite done, as Koepfer and Jao will be representing Tulane at the NCAA singles and doubles championships, occurring May 25-30 at the Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
