BRYAN, Texas - Tulane's bid for a fourth straight trip to the NCAA national championship round fell one stroke short today as the Green Wave combined for a 7-over 295 total and finished in seventh-place at the NCAA Bryan Regional at the Traditions Club.
Tulane finished the day in seventh-place but did briefly move up to sixth-place with Texas following a Longhorn bogey. However, Texas came up with a birdie down the stretch to secure the sixth and final spot. The top six teams from each regional advance to the NCAA Championships, May 20-25, at Eugene Golf Club in Eugene, Ore.
Today, Penttila and freshman Laura Munoz each led the Green Wave with low rounds of 1-over 73, which gave Penttila a 42nd-place finish and Munoz a 59th-place effort.
Senior Silva Garces logged a 2-over 74 for 27th place and junior Belen Goicoechea carded a 3-over 75 for 42nd place. Senior Madison Opfer registered a 4-over 76 but posted Tulane's highest finish of 24th place.
Tulane's senior trio of Garces, Opfer and Penttila saw their collegiate careers come to a close. The class led the Green Wave to four NCAA Regionals, three NCAA National Championship appearances, including a school-best ninth-place finish in 2013, and two conference titles. All three golfers rank among the school's leaders in scoring average, including Penttila who owns Tulane's career mark.
"Today was another fantastic day for our team and the second straight round where we had all five golfers playing at a really high level," Tulane head coach Lorne Don said. "We were in this right down to the last hole. We had some great saves, some great birdies and we fought until the end. We had a slow start on Thursday but really battled back and had a great tournament."
"This is a tough finish for our three seniors. It would have been great for them to make it to their fourth consecutive national championship. But they can hold their heads high with the legacy and impact they left on our program. It will definitely be a group all of our future classes will look up to and they will go down as one of the top recruiting classes in school history," Don added.
Georgia, Arizona, UCLA, Furman, Miami and Texas each finished among the top six squads, respectively, and each school will advance to the national championship rounds.
In the individual race, Georgia's Bailey Tardy and UCLA's Bronte Law were co-champions, each at 7-under.
