Tulane’s Emily Penttila Earns Golfweek All-America Honors

Green Wave trio of Penttila, Abbie Cantwell and Laura Munoz named All-America Scholars
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane's Emily Penttila picked up two more honors to add to her stellar career collegiate career, as she received honorable mention All-America honors from Golfweek.com, while Penttila and the freshmen duo of Abbie Cantwell and Laura Munoz were each named Women's Collegiate Golf Association (WGCA) All-America Scholars.
A native of Helsinki, Finland, Penttila is the first Green Wave golfer to receive All-American honors since Maribel Lopez Porras also earned honorable mention honors in 2013. Off the course, Penttila is now a three-time All-America Scholar. She graduated this past May with a management degree and a 3.648 grade point average (GPA).
"This is another fantastic honor for Emily and a punctuation mark on her record-setting career at Tulane," Tulane head coach Lorne Don said. "Being selected as a Golfweek All-American is a testament to the hard work she has put in and will continue to as she embarks on her professional career."
A four-year letterwinner, Penttila was the 2014 Conference USA and 2014 and 2016 Louisiana Golfer of the Year and concluded her career a four-time first team all-conference and All-Louisiana selection.
During her final season at Tulane, Pentilla played 33 rounds in 11 tournaments and posted a 72.97 scoring average, which was the second-best single-season average in school history. She completed the season ranked No. 50 (Golfstat.com) and was named to the American Athletic Conference first team.
Penttila recorded 16 rounds of par or better, including three rounds in the 60s and all 33 of her rounds this season counted toward the team scores. She set the school record for the lowest 54-hole total with a 9-under 204 during her runner-up finish at the Hurricane Invitational and notched six Top-10 finishes, including three Top-5 efforts.
Cantwell, who hails from Scottsdale, Ariz., played 21 rounds in seven tournaments and produced a 78.76 (1654 strokes) scoring average. She registered an even-par round during the final day of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship. Off the course, she registered a 3.544 GPA as a freshman.
A native of Ibague, Colombia, Munoz was named a first-team All-Louisiana performer during her rookie season. She played 27 rounds in nine tournaments and finished with a 76.30 scoring average and helped the Green Wave to the NCAA Regionals. Munoz recorded three rounds of par or better, including a career-best a 3-under 68 during the final round of the Hurricane Invitational where she tied for 20th place. Twenty-two of her rounds counted towards the team score.
Munoz was also stellar in the classroom where she notched a 3.924 GPA.
"I am very proud of these three ladies for their accomplishments on the course and especially in the classroom. The All-America Scholar award is a great reward for their hard work and commitment to academics," Don said.
