Brings incoming freshmen group to four
NEW ORLEANS – On the first day of August and a new academic school year on the near horizon, Tulane women's tennis head coach Terri Sisk added another valuable piece to the incoming 2016 class, signing Ivone Alvaro. The Portugal native brings the incoming freshmen class to four, as she joins Julieta Dalmau, Isabelle Entenza and Christina Sisti.
"We are absolutely thrilled that Ivone has chosen to join our Tulane family," Sisk stated. "She was quite sought after by many schools so the fact that she chose to spend her collegiate era with us definitely reiterates that we are moving in the right direction as she wants to join our effort in the lofty goals we are aiming for. I'm especially proud that Ivone is not only an amazing tennis player but more so that she is a great kid who works hard daily to reach her goals. With the level of international experience she has had in ITF tournaments as well as WTA, she will make a huge impact for us in both singles and doubles immediately."
Alvaro arrives to Tulane with a lot of national experience to her resume, having competed on Portugal's national team since the age of 11. A five time regional champion and two-time national doubles finalist, Alvaro has twice played at the ITF European U18 Championships.
Alvaro earned her first ATP point at the young age of 15 and achieved a career best WTA ranking of No. 725 at the age of 17. Nationally, Alvaro ranked No. 1 for the Under-18 division and was recently ranked No. 4 for Over-18 (Adult/Pro).
"I chose Tulane for a couple off different reasons," Alvaro explained. "First, it was Coach Sisk and her tennis program - both I heard really good things. Second, the history and the quality of Tulane academics. Third, the city and the weather of New Orleans is very similar to my hometown in Albufeira."
