Junior checks in three spots shy from his career high
NEW ORLEANS – With the Tulane men's tennis' fall campaign set to begin just a little over a week away, it was finally time for Oracle/ITA to release their 2016-17 preseason national rankings on Tuesday. Junior Constantin Schmitz landed on both the singles and doubles lists, checking in at No. 66 in singles, just three spots shy of his career high set last season, and No. 30 in doubles alongside Chi-Shan Jao.
Schmitz enjoyed a stellar sophomore season in which he went 28-7 overall and produced the most dual victories on the team with a 19-3 record. Schmitz also finished strong down the stretch, compiling a 7-1 mark in his final 10 singles matches
Schmitz recorded six ranked victories last spring, including the likes of then ranked No. 66 Arjun Kadhe of Oklahoma State, No. 57 Ryan Peniston of Memphis and No. 53 Jordan Angus of San Diego. In addition, the Germany native made a run in last fall's ITA All-American Championships, winning three straight to qualify for the main draw, along with earning his first career ATP point at the Niceville Futures Tournament.
In doubles, Schmitz went 17-8 overall and 12-6 in dual play. Meanwhile, Jao found much success at No. 1 doubles alongside Dominik Koepfer. The pair produced a 27-10 overall record with a 17-5 mark in dual matches, qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championships, received All-American Athletic Conference recognition and were ranked every single week last spring, peaking as high as No. 7.
