NEW ORLEANS - Tulane football opens its home slate this Saturday at Yulman Stadium against Southern out of the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
Storylines
   • Tulane (0-1, 0-0 American Athtletic Conference | West) kicks off a three-game homestand in the friendly confines of Yulman Stadium against an area foe from right down I-10 in Southern (0-1, 0-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference West).
   • In the 2016 home opener for the Green Wave and first-year head coach Willie Fritz, Tulane looks to earn its first win on the young season and grab its first victory in a home opener since defeating Jackson State, 34-7, on Aug. 31, 2013. The Olive and Blue fell to Georgia Tech (38-21) in its 2014 home opener and and Duke (37-7) on Sept. 6 in its 2015 home opener on Sept. 3.
   • Of Tulane's last 10 head coaches prior to Fritz, six won their first game with the Green Wave within their first three games -- Vince Gibson (third game in 1980), Wally English (seventh game in 1983), Mack Brown (ninth game in 1985), Greg Davis (first game in 1998), Buddy Teevens (first game in 1992), Tommy Bowden (first game in 1997), Chris Scelfo (first game in 1998), Bob Toledo (third game in 2007) and Curtis Johnson (sixth game in 2012). Scelfo's first game was the 1998 Liberty Bowl, replacing Bowden. He got his first regular-season win in the team's second game of the 1999 season.
     • Redshirt sophomore quarterback Glen Cuiellette earned his first collegiate start at Wake Forest and posted a solid performance, throwing for 134 yards on 12-for-23 passing and rushing for 54 yards on 22 attempts. Prior to the season, Tulane was  the lone Division I Football Bowl Subdivision program that did not have a quarterback on its roster who had not thrown a pass. In addition, neither Cuiellette and true freshmen Darius Bradwell and Johnathan Brantley had logged a collegiate start prior to this season. Cuiellette, Bradwell and Brantley are 1-2-3 on the depth chart.
   • Cuiellette and junior running back Dontrell Hilliard each accounted for 54 all-purpose yards in the defeat to Wake Forest. Hillard led the team in all-purpose yards per game last year at 76.1.   Â
   • Senior defensive tackle Tanzel Smart, senior linebacker Nico Marley and redshirt junior cornerback Parry Nickerson headline the Green Wave defense once again this season. In the season opener, Smart posted his second-consecutive game with multiple tackles for loss (2.0), Marley started his 26th-straight game in middle and recorded five tackles including one for a loss and Nickerson recorded a career-best three pass breakups.  Â
