NEW ORLEANS – Sophomore Anise Muir rang in the New Year in fine fashion, putting together the best diving performance of her career in Tulane swimming & diving's 177-107 defeat to Alabama on Friday afternoon at the Reily Center Natatorium.
Â
Muir posted an impressive score of 272.70 in one-meter diving to earn a spot in the 2017 NCAA Zone D Diving Championships set for March 6-8 in Columbia, Mo. The Alexandria, Va., native also posted a score of 253.72 in three-meter diving.
Â
"It was just out of nowhere," said diving coach Chris Devine. "When we set our goals this year, that one wasn't even one that we set for this year. That was more for next year. To have (Anise) have that kind of meet and just put it all together, I've never seen her dive so well. So now she qualifies for the zone championships and gets to go see the best diving in the country and compete against it."
Â
Muir was not the only bright spot for the Green Wave in its 2017 debut as senior Joy Jason and freshman Morgan Tacik each posted two second-place finishes. Jason came in second in the 100 breast (1:06.82) and 200 breast (2:26.37), while Tacik was the runner-up in the 1000 free (10:19.74) and 500 free (5:08.49).
Â
Sophomore Paris Zhang nearly edged Alabama's Caroline Beene in the 100 free, finishing just two-hundredths of a second behind in 52.65. Freshman Gabby Vieira (57.52) and junior Alex Brindisi (57.60) went 2-3 in the 100 fly and freshman Claire Golba took second in the 100 back (58.06).
Â
"Alabama was a great competitor," said assistant coach Sarah Woodbury. "They really challenged us in the water and it really helped our girls push themselves more they have in the past. They did a really great job and I'm really proud of their efforts today."
Â
Tulane steps away from competition to complete its winter training and will be back in action on Jan. 27-28 in Baton Rouge, La., against Houston, Rice and host LSU.
