CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Tulane women's golf is back on the links this weekend on the campus of North Carolina at the Finley Golf Club for the 2017 Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament gets underway Friday with first-round action beginning at 9:39 a.m. CT. Tulane is amongst another stellar field that includes the nation's top two ranked teams (Arkansas and Alabama), as well as six other teams ranked in the top 30 (Duke, Michigan State, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Wake Forest) in the latest Golfweek Women's Team Collegiate Rankings. Iowa, Louisville, Michigan, UNCW, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Rollins, Virginia Tech and host North Carolina round out the 18-team field.Â
Head coach Lorne Don said he feels his Green Wave squad has been working hard to take the positives from the last tournament into the team's preparation for this weekend's event.
"We saw so many good things during that final round (at the Windy City Collegiate) and we built that into our last week of practice," Don added. "We had some areas to improve and I feel like we have addressed those. We had some good competition within our team and shot some good rounds. I think everyone is feeling good heading into this event."
The Green Wave return to the Tar Heel Invitational for the first time since 2011 with the lineup of junior Laura Munoz at No. 1, sophomore Gabrielle Correia at No. 2, freshman Jennifer Rosenberg at No. 3, sophomore Haydyn Gibson at No. 4 and junior Abbie Cantwell at No. 5. Munoz tops the Tulane lineup for a third time this fall with a team-best 74.00 stroke average, while Cantwell moves into lineup for the first time since her freshman season.
"Throughout this semester, we've had eight players who have been pushing each other," Don said. "In the long run, that's how we are going to get to level we are looking to achieve – having eight players playing at a high level. We are starting to see that. I feel confident with any one of the eight representing us. These five going this weekend are going to do a great job on a course that is very similar to the first course we played this season. I think they are going to feel very comfortable out there."Â
Following the Tar Heel Invitational, Tulane closes out its fall schedule Nov. 3-5 in San José del Cabo, Mexico at Battle at the Beach.
