NEW ORLEANSย -- Tulane volleyball embarks on its second-to-last road trip of the season this weekend when it travels to Florida to take on UCF and USF. The Green Wave are set to play UCF 7 p.m., Friday, before traveling across state to face USF at noon on Sunday.
"The women continue to work hard in the gym," head coach Jim Barnes said. "A lot of them have been entrusted with roles you don't normally give young players, but it's the way the cards were dealt to us this year. When we play consistent, we can beat any team. We have been showing flashes of brilliance, but we can't maintain it to pull out these close sets. When you do win those games, the confidence comes from that and you're able to put some wins in a row."
Earlier this season, Tulane lost in straight sets to USF at home, before falling 3-1 against UCF. Junior middle hitter Dayna Kern tallied 25 kills over the weekend, while senior setter Justine Bowers recorded 63 assists. Sophomore libero Kaylie McHugh notched 29 digs in two matches.
"We've madeย changes toย find a combination that would really show consistency since we last played [UCF and USF]," Barnes said. "We did well in a 6-2 last weekend, and we're going to just stay in that for the rest of the season to let the players play in that system. We're trying to win games this year and let players show their ability. This is part of building the program, and there's a lot of fight left in them this year."ย
Last time out, the Green Wave dropped a five-set heartbreaker against Tulsa and lost in straight sets to SMU. Bowers recorded a triple-double against Tulsa, posting 12 digs, 12 kills and 49 assists.
