NEW ORLEANS – The (RV) Tulane men's tennis team (5-1) battled for over three hours vs Auburn (4-3) on Friday afternoon at City Park before emerging with the 5-2 victory. The Green Wave won the doubles point, followed by a ranked singles victory from Constantin Schmitz, a gutsy three-set win from Sebastian Rey and straight-set victories from Tyler Schick and Luis Erlenbusch.
"Went up against a big SEC program like Auburn and to have them on our home courts today was good for us. Our guys came out and imposed our will in doubles and gave us some momentum into singles," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "We knew it was going to be a tough fight and that they were going to make it miserable for us but I was really proud of how we kept things together under pressure."
Erlenbusch improved to 5-0 this spring after a 6-4, 6-2, victory on court five over Dante Saleh. Schick then pushed the Wave lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 7-6(5) win over Edward Nguyen on court four. Next, Auburn fought back, cutting the deficit to 3-2 with victories on courts two and six.
Tulane then looked to its upperclassmen to close it out, starting with No. 30 Schmitz picking up another ranked victory with a 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-0, win on court one vs No. 91 Max Hinnisdaels.
In another impressive performance today, Rey staved off defeat against Conner Huertas, trailing 1-6, 2-5, before rallying to take the last two sets, 7-5, 6-4 to close out the day.
Earlier in the day, Rey and Jao earned their biggest doubles win to date, quickly dispatching No. 13 Hinnisdaels/Huertas, 6-1.
Up next, Tulane welcomes in North Florida on Sunday at Noon CT.
