PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Redshirt senior Alyssa Applebee, a pole vaulter out of Seneca, Illinois, has become the first Tulane student-athlete of this year's indoor season to earn Field Athlete of the Week honors, the American Athletic Conference announced this morning. Applebee received this distinction for posting the conference's top pole vault mark of the season last weekend at the Don Kirby Invitational in New Mexico.
"It's a great honor for Alyssa to get this weekly award, and it's a great honor for our team as well because it means that somebody on our squad had the top performance in our conference," associate head coach Doug Fraley said. "She is very deserving of this honor because her mark in Albuquerque put her within the top 16 nationally, a qualifying mark for the NCAA Indoor National Championships. I'm very happy for her to receive this distinction because she has worked very hard for it."
Applebee cleared a height of 4.22m (13-10.00) inside the Albuquerque Convention Center on Saturday afternoon, earning Tulane's highest mark of the season and coming within centimeters of a school record. She also tied a personal best that she set at last year's SEC Championships while placing fourth in a field of some of the top pole vaulters in the nation.
Saturday's performance moved Applebee into a tie for 12th in the women's pole vault rankings. The top 16 following all conference meets will advance to the NCAA Indoor National Championships on March 10-11 in College Station, Texas.
Tulane will close out the regular indoor season this weekend at the LSU Twilight in Baton Rouge on Friday night. The American Athletic Conference Championships will take place Friday and Saturday Feb. 24-25 at the Birmingham Crossplex Arena in Alabama.
