STARKVILLE, Miss. – After the dust settled between the top-25 showdown between No. 22 Tulane (7-2) vs No. 20 Mississippi State (5-4), it was Bulldogs who emerged victorious via a 4-1 win on their home court.
"Mississippi State played a very solid match today. They took advantage of some below average performances by a few of our guys and turned them into mismatches," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "This was not characteristic of how we've been competing this year. Hopefully the guys will take that to heart and respond well tomorrow because we have another very tough battle ahead of us in NC State."
Mississippi State grabbed the early 1-0 lead by claiming the doubles point against the Wave with a 6-4 victory on court one and a 6-0 win on court three. Then the Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 advantage by earning a 6-2, 6-0 win on court three over Sebastian Rey in singles, as the senior picked up just his second loss of the spring season.
Next, the Wave got on the board via senior Chi-Shan Jao, who returned to the singles lineup on court six and cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Trevor Foshey. Yet, the Bulldogs immediately recaptured the momentum by handing No. 37 Constantin Schmitz his first loss of the year, now 6-1, in a top-40 showdown with No. 4 Nuno Borges, 6-4, 6-2. Mississippi State then clinched the 4-1 win with a 6-2, 6-4, win on court five.
Up next, Tulane will look to bounce back when they remain in Starkville for a neutral court match-up vs No. 38 North Carolina State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
