NEW ORLEANS – Returning to action for the first time in two weeks, the No. 25 Tulane men's tennis team (9-2) showed no signs of rust, recording a 7-0 sweep over the visiting Penn Quakers. It marked the third 7-0 sweep for the Green Wave this season.
"Penn is a very solid Ivy League program and Coach Geatz has done a great job with his guys. They've gotten some wins over top-40 programs so we knew what kind of level they would bring," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "Playing a complete match with the 7-0 sweep means a lot for our guys. It shows a lot of maturity that they were able to finish it off there at the end."
The doubles point came down to court three as the new pairing of Sebastian Rey and Tim Ruetzel battled Penn's Josh Pompan and Thomas Spratt into a tiebreak. There, the Wave pairing collected their first win together, 7-6(4).
In singles, Tyler Schick wrapped his match before a few of the courts finished their first sets, as the sophomore quickly cruised to a 6-1, 6-1, victory on court four. Schick picked up his team leading sixth straight win to improve to 8-1 this spring.
Tying Schick for the most wins, also now 8-1, is No. 38 Constantin Schmitz, who battled back after a 6-0 first set loss, to take it 6-1, 6-3. On courts five and six, both Luis Erlenbusch and Chi-Shan Jao each toughed out first-set tiebreak wins for straight-set victories.
No. 118 Rey claimed a 6-2, 6-7(8), 6-3 on court two before newly ranked No. 125 Ewan Moore finished it off on court two with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, win.
Up next, the Green Wave look to complete a perfect weekend when they host Middle Tennessee on Sunday, March 12, at 1 p.m.
