No. 30 Men’s Tennis to Compete in San Diego Tournament
Mar 15, 2017 | Men's Tennis
SAN DIEGO – The No. 30 Tulane men's tennis team heads west to compete in the San Diego Tournament starting Thursday, March 16. The three-day event features an eight-team bracket, as the Green Wave received the No. 2 seed and will square off against Arizona at Noon CT.
THE FIELD
The field was seeded partially based on this week's Oracle/ITA rankings, thus No. 25 Oregon was awarded the No. 1 seed and will open up with co-host San Diego State. The four-five seed match-up pits Iowa vs Harvard. On the Wave's side of the bracket, co-host San Diego squares off with Drake. Both Tulane vs Arizona and Drake vs USD will be played on San Diego's campus on Thursday.
LAST YEAR AT THE SAN DIEGO TOURNAMENT
In 2016, Tulane defeated both No. 46 Denver and No. 34 San Diego by 4-3 final scores to advance to the tournament championship match. There, the Wave came up just short, falling 4-3 to No. 8 Texas Tech.
WATCHING THE WAVE
The Olive and Blue enter the tournament with a 10-2 spring record and the winner of three straight, including two consecutive 7-0 sweeps over Penn and Middle Tennessee.
Sophomore Tyler Schick is off to a blazing start, co-leading the team with a 9-1 dual record at No. 4 singles. Schick has also won a team best seven straight. Co-leading with Schick at 9-1 is No. 38 Constantin Schmitz. Lastly, freshman Ewan Moore has won five straight to improve to 8-3, which includes two ranked wins over top-65 opponents. As a result, Moore received his first singles ranking, checking in at No. 125.
DOUBLE-TAKE
The Olive and Blue are 7-4 in doubles this season. When Tulane has claimed the early 1-0 advantage, they are 7-2.
A LOOK AT ARIZONA
Arizona enters with an 8-7 record and a three-match losing streak, falling to Cal Poly, Denver and South Alabama. The Wildcats last win occurred on March 3 via a 4-0 shutout over New Mexico State. Arizona doesn't boast any ranked singles or doubles pairings.
